Your adventure begins with a visit to the Carving Shed, where the artistry of totem pole carving comes to life. This active workshop, led by master formline artist Jon Rowan, is where Klawock’s next generation of carvers hone their skills. As you explore the shed, you’ll gain insight into the traditional techniques used to craft these iconic symbols, from selecting the right trees to the intricacies of both ancient and modern carving methods. The shed also plays a vital role in preserving Klawock’s totemic history, with ongoing efforts to restore and add new poles to the community’s rich cultural legacy.

Next, take a walk along the Klawock River Trail, where towering trees line the path and the gentle flow of the river provides a peaceful soundtrack. Along the way, you’ll learn about the area’s diverse flora and fauna, and discover the importance of the river as a historic and year-round fishing hub for the Klawock-Heenya people.

Start your adventure by boarding a comfortable, heated, custom-built 6-passenger vessel equipped with suspension seats and a spacious back deck. Your professional captain will be there to assist you and provide all the necessary fishing gear.

As you head to the fishing grounds, keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and bald eagles. Fish for Pacific salmon (in season) and bottom species like halibut, rockfish, and lingcod at prime locations.

Upon arriving at the lodge, relax indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather, while your chef prepares a delicious meal using your catch. Savor an appetizer, side dishes, and a delightful dessert while taking in the stunning views of Port Saint Nicholas.

This fishing and dining excursion combines adventure with exquisite culinary experiences, perfect for a diverse range of guests. You’ll return to port via van transfer, completing an unforgettable day.

Alaska State regulation requires those engaging in sportfishing to purchase and carry on their person a State of Alaska sport fishing license, which should be purchased in advance of your tour. One day non-resident licenses are $15 per person. A king salmon stamp ($15 per person) is required if you plan to target or retain this species. Children under the age of 16 are not required to purchase sportfishing licenses.

• Choose “Shop as Guest” and enter the required information Choose “Fishing, Hunting, Trapping Licenses & Stamps”
• Under Short-Term Products, use the drop-down menu to: Chose the sport fishing license matching your intended duration (if fishing across multiple days, select a term spanning all relevant dates.)
• Input the starting date and time of your fishing activity and add to cart.
• In May, June and July add a King salmon stamp.
• Checkout Bring a printed copy of your license or proof of license through the ADFG app.

In this area, king salmon fishing starts in early June and peaks the middle of July and stays strong throughout the summer. Silver salmon fishing starts around the beginning of July and runs through the end of August.

Bottom fishing is done by jigging bait off the ocean floor, typically in 100 to 300 feet of water, while the boat is on anchor or drifting in one area. Each fisherman has use of their own rod and reel while fishing.

Fish caught is eaten at the lodge.

Any additional catch can be processed and shipped home for an additional charge as arranged by the tour operator. Because of its perishable nature and U.S. Customs regulations, your catch may not be sent outside of the United States. Due to federal regulations, your catch may not be stored onboard your cruise ship, but a portion may be prepared for dinner onboard.

The Klawock River Hatchery, a vital part of salmon conservation in Southeast Alaska, has been releasing millions of wild salmon fry back into the river since 1977. On a guided tour, you’ll learn about the hatchery’s important work and may even witness salmon spawning.

Next, head to the peaceful shores of Klawock Lake for a kayaking adventure. After a safety briefing, paddle through the crystal-clear waters, exploring the islands and shoreline while learning about the lake’s unique ecosystem. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including great blue herons, Sitka blacktail deer, and possibly a black bear foraging along the shore.

After your paddle through this serene wilderness, you’ll return to the pier, leaving the stillness of the lake behind, carrying memories of an unforgettable journey.
