Board a purpose-built wildlife-viewing boat at the Klawock tender dock, where your guide will select the best locations for wildlife sightings based on the latest reports. In the summer, humpback whales visit Klawock’s waters to feed on plankton, herring, and salmon fry, offering a spectacular and educational encounter. Keep an eye out for sea otters, often drifting in rafts with the tide, using seaweed beds for shelter and rest. While they may look adorable, you’ll also learn about their significant impact on the local marine ecosystem.

River Hatchery & Lake Kayak

The Klawock River Hatchery, a vital part of salmon conservation in Southeast Alaska, has been releasing millions of wild salmon fry back into the river since 1977. On a guided tour, you’ll learn about the hatchery’s important work and may even witness salmon spawning.
Next, head to the peaceful shores of Klawock Lake for a kayaking adventure. After a safety briefing, paddle through the crystal-clear waters, exploring the islands and shoreline while learning about the lake’s unique ecosystem. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including great blue herons, Sitka blacktail deer, and possibly a black bear foraging along the shore.
After your paddle through this serene wilderness, you’ll return to the pier, leaving the stillness of the lake behind, carrying memories of an unforgettable journey.

Bear Spotting by Jeep
Experience one of Prince of Wales Island’s premier bear-viewing spots on a self-drive Jeep tour led by a knowledgeable guide. From July to September, black bears and bald eagles gather at Dog Salmon Fish Pass to feast on spawning pink and chum salmon.
Located at the outlet of Dog Salmon Creek, this natural chokepoint offers exceptional wildlife viewing from elevated platforms maintained by the Forest Service. Watch bears fish, eagles soar, and salmon leap up the fish ladder—all from a safe, scenic vantage point.
As Prince of Wales Island hosts only black bears, sightings are often plentiful but not guaranteed. This popular spot in Tongass National Forest is visitor friendly and provides surprising opportunities for wildlife spotting and photography. The tour includes scenic stops along the drive, showcasing the island’s rich landscapes and allowing guests to switch drivers.

Special Notes: Drivers must be at least 25 years old and are required to show a valid driver’s license. Non-drivers can be accommodated. Jeeps are shared to accommodate up to four guests. Multiple stops will be made along the way to allow for guests to switch drivers.
